Sunset Drive Office
In Kansas, Johnson County’s new 129,000-s.f. administrative facility embraces its environmental context to create a striking workplace that transcends the typical government office.

The facility’s organization along a single-loaded “timber” arcade creates a dynamic dichotomy. North of the arcade, the public encounters a stately entrance, civic plaza and lobby, with a demonstration bio-garden fed by captured rainwater.

Public services are aligned along the arcade for convenient access. Providing a buffer to the private offices, the arcade also features ground-to-sky glazing and reclaimed timber treatments that blur the distinction between the internal and external environments.

Executed as a design-build project, the LEED® Gold facility delivers a lasting impression with minimal impact on local energy and water resources.

Inspired by the site’s environmental context, the design represents the flow of nature, the ideal of civic government and the best value for taxpayers.
